Five players earn All-A-R-C honors, Roling named Coach of the Year

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – After producing the program's highest conference finish since 2008, the Simpson College baseball team was rewarded with five All-American Rivers Conference selections and the league's Coach of the Year honor for Nathan Roling.

Juniors Drew Carlson, Tijmen Nagel and Charlie Thomas were all named to the A-R-C First Team, while junior Trenten Kingrey earned second team honors and sophomore Jacob Roberts was selected honorable mention.

Roling becomes the first Simpson coach to earn A-R-C Coach of the Year recognition since 2006 and the second coach in program history to receive the award, joining seven-time honoree John Sirianni. Under Roling, the Storm produced one of the program's strongest seasons in two decades, finishing 24-18 overall and securing the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, Simpson's highest conference finish and win total since 2008. The Storm advanced in the A-R-C Tournament with a 12-6 win over Loras before falling to the conference's top two seeds.

Simpson's offense reached historic levels throughout the spring, batting .295 with a .405 on-base percentage and .429 slugging percentage, all the highest marks of the Roling era. The Storm totaled 285 runs and 409 hits, both the program's highest totals since 2009, while producing their most doubles, home runs, RBIs and total bases since 2004. Simpson additionally recorded its most walks since 1999, most stolen bases since 2011, and most hit-by-pitches in program history.

Drew Carlson, first team

  • Junior infielder and pitcher from Iowa City, Iowa
  • Tied for second in the A-R-C with 19 walks drawn against league pitchers
  • Ranked fourth in the league with 26 runs scored during conference play
  • Collected 31 hits, including eight doubles, in league action
  • Led Simpson in total runs scored (39) and triples (3)
  • Tied for second on the team in total RBIs (29)
  • Picked up two wins on the mound in conference play
  • Named A-R-C Player of the Week on April 13
  • Selected to D3baseball.com Team of the Week on April 15

Tijmen Nagel, first team

  • Junior shortstop from Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Registered the fourth-best batting average in conference play at .391
  • Finished top 10 in slugging percentage (.609) and on-base percentage (.458)
  • Stole nine bases against A-R-C foes, tying for the fourth most
  • Led the Storm with a .349 overall batting average

Charlie Thomas, first team

  • Junior pitcher from Omaha, Neb.
  • Registered a 3.20 ERA across 39.1 conference innings
  • Went 4-0 against league opponents while allowing just 14 earned runs
  • Tied for third in the conference with 44 strikeouts in A-R-C play
  • Achieved eight wins overall, the most by a Simpson pitcher since 1999
  • Recorded 73 strikeouts and a 4.06 ERA overall
  • Named A-R-C Pitcher of the Week on March 30

Trenten Kingrey, second team

  • Junior outfielder from Knoxville, Iowa
  • Earns second team recognition for the second straight season
  • Broke Simpson's single-season doubles record with 19, including a league-best 14 in conference play
  • Tied for second in the league in runs scored during conference play (27)
  • Ranked top 10 in slugging percentage (.621), on-base percentage (.462), hits (33), RBIs (22), and walks (17) in conference play
  • Batted .321 overall while leading the Storm in total hits (53), RBIs (36), doubles (19), home runs (8) and at bats (165)
  • Recorded eight home runs, the most by a Simpson batter since 2010

Jacob Roberts, honorable mention

  • Sophomore catcher from Bondurant, Iowa
  • Earns honorable mention accolades for the second straight season
  • Led the A-R-C with 22 walks and 18 hit-by-pitches in conference play
  • Reached base at a .500 clip during the conference season (3rd in A-R-C)
  • Stole eight bases against A-R-C foes, ranking sixth
  • Broke Simpson's single-game (4) and single-season (29) hit-by-pitch records
  • Led the Storm with 13 stolen bases overall, the most by a Simpson player since 2011
  • Ranked second on the team in total doubles (14) and RBIs (29)
