Storm fall twice at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader to Luther, falling 11-6 in game one and 13-3 in game two.

The Storm (21-15, 12-9 A-R-C) led 5-2 through six innings in the opener before Luther (29-9, 19-5 A-R-C) used a three-run seventh and a six-run eighth to pull away. In game two, the Norse struck early with a two-run homer in the first and a five-run third, building a lead Simpson couldn't overcome.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • The Storm came out strong, scoring twice in the first inning on an RBI double from Trenten Kingrey and a run-scoring groundout by Bryson Gibson.
  • After Luther answered with a pair of solo home runs to even the game, Simpson regained control with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Nate Cagley drove in a run with a single in the third, Tijmen Nagel added an RBI double in the fourth, and Gibson delivered another run-scoring double in the fifth to give Simpson a 5-2 advantage.
  • Luther chipped away in the seventh, using a solo home run, an RBI single and a run-scoring fielder's choice to tie the game at 5-5.
  • The Norse then broke it open in the eighth, capitalizing on an error before a three-run home run extended the lead to 11-5.
  • Cagley added a solo home run in the ninth for Simpson, but the late rally came up short as Luther secured the opener.

  • The Norse jumped in front in the first inning with a two-run home run and broke the game open in the third, stringing together five runs to build a 7-0 lead.
  • Simpson responded in the fourth, as Dalton Ferrin delivered a two-run double and later scored on an error to cut the deficit to 7-3.
  • Luther answered immediately in the bottom half and continued to add on, extending its lead with runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
