Thomas fans 11 as Simpson splits with Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team split its American Rivers Conference doubleheader with Coe on Saturday, using an 11-strikeout performance from Charlie Thomas to win game one 5-0 before falling 8-3 in game two.

Nate Cagley led the Storm (10-8, 1-2 A-R-C) with three RBIs, while Jacob Roberts and Trenten Kingrey each launched home runs and Kasey Carter added three hits and an RBI. Simpson outhit Coe (13-7, 4-2 A-R-C) 11-7 in the first game but committed five errors in the second, leading to seven unearned runs.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Simpson opened the day with a 5-0 shutout behind a dominant performance from Charlie Thomas.
  • The Storm struck first in the opening inning on an RBI single from Nate Cagley and added to the lead in the third when Jacob Roberts homered to left.
  • Simpson extended its advantage with a two-run fourth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Kasey Carter and Roberts, before adding an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from Drew Carlson.
  • Thomas improved to 4-0 on the season, tossing eight scoreless innings while striking out 11 and allowing just six hits. Jake Edenburn closed out the game with a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout.

  • Coe jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in an 8-3 win over Simpson in game two.
  • The Kohawks scored three runs in the first inning and added two more in the fourth and two in the fifth to build a 7-2 advantage.
  • Simpson got on the board in the second on a solo home run from Trenten Kingrey and added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Nate Cagley.
  • The Storm plated another run in the eighth on an RBI single from Cagley, but Coe answered in the bottom half to maintain its cushion.
  • Jack Shaffer took the loss despite striking out six over five innings, as all seven runs he allowed were unearned.
