Simpson finishes Florida trip strong with doubleheader sweep

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Simpson College baseball team completed its Florida trip with a sweep over Knox, winning 11-7 in game one and 16-3 in game two.

The Storm (8-5) overcame an early deficit in game one with a seven-run fifth inning and carried that momentum into game two, amassing 16 hits and 16 runs, both season highs. Nate Cagley and Trenten Kingrey each belted two home runs, Jacob Roberts was 3-for-4 with four RBIs in game two, and Charlie Thomas and Easton Dunwoody combined for 15 strikeouts while picking up wins on the mound.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Knox (1-10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and added two more runs in the third, but Simpson kept pace with three runs in the second, highlighted by RBI singles from Kasey Carter and Dalton Ferrin.
  • Nate Cagley cut the deficit to 6-4 with a solo home run in the third.
  • The Storm took control in the fifth, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs to turn a 6-4 deficit into an 11-6 lead. Simpson drew five walks and was hit by three pitches in the inning.
  • Knox pushed across a run in the seventh and loaded the bases, but Jake Edenburn escaped the jam with a groundout to seal the 11-7 win.
  • Charlie Thomas struck out eight across five innings to improve to 3-0 on the year.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • The Storm jumped out early, scoring in each of the first four innings, including a two-run double from Jacob Roberts in the second and a solo home run from Trenten Kingrey in the third.
  • After Knox cut into the lead in the fourth, Simpson responded with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a solo home run from Nate Cagley and a two-run single from Roberts.
  • Simpson broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning fueled by Kingrey's second home run of the game, a two-run shot to right field.
  • The Storm added four more runs in the seventh as pinch hitters Ty Lowry and Jaxon Dent tallied their first RBIs of the year.
  • Easton Dunwoody secured his second win in the Sunshine State, striking out seven across six innings.
