Carter drives in gamewinner, Schlee closes out 5-4 win
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Kasey Carter drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and Dylan Schlee struck out two with the bases loaded in the ninth to give the Simpson College baseball team a 5-4 win over Saint John's (Minn.) on Saturday.
The Storm (3-1) got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Drew Carlson reached home on an unearned run in the first, and Simpson extended its lead in the second with RBIs from Ian Baldwin and Jacob Roberts.
Saint John's (2-2) battled back in the seventh, plating two runs on a Justin Brooks single, but Simpson answered immediately as Sam Campin doubled in Ian Baldwin to restore a two-run cushion. The Johnnies tied the game in the eighth on two runs scoring via an error.
After a leadoff double from Trenten Kingrey and a sacrifice bunt from Dalton Ferrin, Carter delivered the go-ahead RBI single. Saint John's loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Schlee struck out two in a row to secure the victory.
Charley Mershon started for Simpson, striking out seven over five scoreless innings. The Storm pitchers finished with a 13-3 strikeout advantage, with Schlee adding five and Jake Edenburn contributing one.
