Simpson kicks off spring break with two wins over Beloit

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Simpson College baseball team opened its Florida trip with a sweep of Beloit on Friday, winning 4-0 in the opener and 10-1 in the nightcap.

In game one, Charlie Thomas tossed 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out five, and Jake Edenburn finished with three strikeouts across 1.2 hitless innings to preserve the shutout. Dalton Ferrin, Drew Carlson and Sam Campin powered the offense, driving in all four runs.

Simpson (5-3) carried the momentum into the nightcap, outhitting Beloit (6-5) 15-3 and scoring 10 runs, including seven in the second inning. Easton Dunwoody threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts, while Carlson (3 RBI), Jacob Roberts (2 RBI) and Campin (2 RBI) each drove in multiple runs to seal the sweep.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • The Storm broke through in the third inning as Dalton Ferrin delivered a two-run triple down the right field line, scoring Jacob Roberts and Sam Campin. Ferrin later came home on a sacrifice fly from Nate Cagley to give Simpson a 3-0 lead.
  • Simpson added an insurance run in the fourth. After three batters were hit by pitches, Drew Carlson lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Ian Baldwin and extend the advantage to four.
  • Charlie Thomas earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits while striking out five across 5.1 scoreless innings. Jake Edenburn entered in the sixth and helped Simpson escape a jam with two runners on and one out before finishing the game with 1.2 hitless innings and three strikeouts to secure his second save of the season.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • Simpson jumped on the board in the first when Drew Carlson drove in Jacob Roberts with a groundout.
  • The Storm then broke the game open in the second, scoring seven runs on five hits. Kasey Carter started the rally with an RBI double before Sam Campin added a two-run double. Roberts followed with an RBI double down the left field line, and Carlson delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a two-run triple to right. Nate Cagley capped the surge with an RBI groundout to make it 8-0.
  • Beloit scored its lone run on a sacrifice fly in the second, but Simpson continued to add insurance runs. Roberts brought home another run with a sacrifice fly in the third, and Matthew Florence drove in Nate Cagley with a single in the fourth to extend the lead to 10-1.
  • Easton Dunwoody earned the win on the mound, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out 10 over seven innings. The Storm offense finished with 15 hits while limiting Beloit to three in the complete-game effort.
