Simpson's bats deliver two wins; secure perfect start to opening weekend

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - Simpson's offense exploded for a combined 18 runs over two games to complete a perfect 4-0 start to the opening weekend of action.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Eau Claire scored once in the first and then broke open the lead with a four-run second inning.
  • Heidelbauer put the Storm on the board in the third with an RBI triple and later scored on an RBI from Bruening. An Obleton two-RBI double capped off the third as Simpson responded back with a four-run inning of its own.
  • After another Blu Gold run in the third, James tied up the game in the fourth with a two-run home run, scoring Steen.
  • Simpson took the first lead of the game in the fifth on an error by Eau Claire allowing Obleton to score.
  • In the seventh, the Storm added one more insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double from Ortlund before Simpson wrapped up the 8-6 win.
  • LaFave got the start for the Storm going two innings before Cronin came in the final five innings, allowing just one unearned run with six strikeouts for the win.

GAME ONE LEADERS

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • A pair of errors gave Simpson a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the second before St. Catherine tied up the game with their own three-run second inning.
  • An Obleton RBI groundout gave Simpson the lead back in the fourth. Steen broke open the game with one swing, slugging a two-out grand slam to give the Storm a five-run lead.
  • Gookin added to the lead with a solo shot of her own in the sixth and a Schertz RBI double down the line capped off Simpson's 10-4 win over St. Catherine.
  • Breckner got the start for the Storm in the circle going two innings before Frederickson pitched three one-run innings for the win. LaFave was called in to finish the final innings to complete the weekend sweep.
