INDIANOLA, Iowa - Down to the final push, Simpson turned to leading goal scorer in the conference, and Mitchell Dickson delivered with a game-tying goal to force a critical 1-1 draw against Luther on Wednesday night.
In the opening half, Simpson locked down the Norse attack, not allowing the first shot of the match for nearly 30 minutes. Over the 45 minutes, Luther was held to only four shots, none of which were able to find their way on net. The Storm's best opportunity came when an outlet pass found Tim Sedlock who was swarmed by six defenders in the box before he could get a shot off.
Despite the strong defensive performance from the Storm, Luther finally managed to break through in the 58th minute. Off a shot that was saved by the Storm backline, the ball ricocheted right to a Luther player who punched home the first goal of the match.
After the goal, Simpson adjusted their formation in an attempt to tie the score. The new offensive look resulted in a corner quickly, giving Romeo Alvarez the first shot for Simpson, a ball right on net to the Luther keeper at the 66 minute mark.
Simpson continued to apply pressure and with the clock running down, the Storm found their leading scorer in the box. Dickson managed to create space with defenders all around him, sending a ball back behind him to the lower right of the goal for his tenth goal of the year. Grant Strickler earned the assist after playing the ball in from the far wing to Dickson.
