Storm finish third at DIII Invite, three wrestlers named champions
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Simpson College women's wrestling team captured a third place team finish at the Quad Cities D3 Invite behind three championship finishes from Paige Gershmel, Annelise Obermark, and Keeley Kehrli.
The Storm narrowly missed runner-up honors, finishing with 146.5 team points to trail Wis.-Stevens Point with 147.0 points. Wartburg won the team race with 182.5 points.
Gershmel and Obermark both won their fourth tournament titles of the year while adding to impressive double-digit win streaks. Kehrli cruised through her bracket to secure her second championship of the season while becoming the second Storm wrestler ever to reach 30 wins in a season.
INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS
- Gershmel pushed her win streak to 11 with three 10-0 technical falls followed by two 7-2 decisions. She capped her day with a victory over 10th-ranked Aniyah Kelly of Wartburg, improving to 35-7.
- No. 9 Obermark also extended her win streak with an undefeated day, going 4-0 with three technical falls and a pin in just 28 seconds. She has won 16 straight matches and improves to 28-2.
- No. 10 Kehrli was one of four Simpson wrestlers to tally three pins, winning in 0:39, 0:25, and 2:16. She also recorded a pair of technical falls, including a 12-1 decision over teammate Breanna Wier in the championship. Wier registered three pins as well before falling to Kehrli.
- Layla Phillips and Savannah Sistad both earned second place medals with a trio of wins, while Sarah Zimmerman and Jenna Joseph finished on the podium as well.
UP NEXT
Simpson begins postseason action by hosting the NCWWC Region VII Championship on Feb. 22 inside Cowles Fieldhouse.
