Storm fall in road test to Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - After an impressive first half that saw the Storm up by double-digits, Augsburg surged back with an all-around second half, knocking off Simpson 80-69 on Friday night.

Levi Gurwell led the Storm's (1-2) attack on the night, ending with 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting, along with five boards and three assists. Cam Henderson added 10 points and three different Storm finished with nine points each.

In the first half, Simpson connected on 15-for-35 (42.9 percent) of its attempts but struggled to match in the second half, dipping to 31.6 percent shooting. Augsburg (2-0) outrebounded Simpson 41 to 39 while Simpson added 12 assists and 10 steals on 13 turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game started as a defensive grind, with both sides nearly gridlocked through the first 10 minutes at 13-11 in favor of Augsburg.
  • The Storm found their footing on the offensive end, using an 8-2 run to jumpstart the scoring. Over the final 10 minutes of the first half, Simpson outscored Augsburg 27 to 16, led by Jachin Mertes' seven points.
  • Simpson's double-digit lead started to slowly trickle away and eventually gave way during an 11-0 run by the Auggies with 13:28 left in the half.
  • The momentum did not stop for Augsburg as the half rolled on, eventually extending its lead to double-digits with four minutes on the clock and securing the 80-69 result.
