Storm sweep weekend in Storm Lake, clinch IIAC berth
STORM LAKE - The Simpson women's tennis team defeated Buena Vista and Morningside over the weekend, ensuring a berth in the Iowa Conference Team Tournament after missing out a year ago.
The Storm (6-4, 4-3 IIAC) defeated Buena Vista 6-3 and knocked off non-conference foe Morningside, 5-4.
"I was thrilled to get the two wins on the day," head coach Lindsay Chase said. "The win over BV was big, as making the conference tournament was a goal of mine at the start of the season. Our solid doubles play on the day was a big factor in both of our wins."
Simpson went 5-1 in doubles on the day, getting the team out to early leads in each match. The teams of Jill Berner (Albia, Iowa) and Tiffany Bost (Spokane, Wash.) and Allison Anderson (Eldridge, Iowa) and Mikayla Struebing (Indianola, Iowa) each went 2-0 in doubles.
Both Anderson and Struebing finished the day undefeated in singles play as well. Anderson swept the competition at No. 4 singles and Struebing took care of business at the No. 3 spot. Both singles matches for Struebing went to the tie breaker, as she defeated Buena Vista's Haley Henrichs (3-6, 6-4, 11-9) and Morningside's Lynn Leonard (6-4, 4-6, 10-2). Anderson's match with Morningside's Amanda Przymus also went to a third set, coming back for the 6-7, 6-1, 11-9 win.
Lindsay Nash (Keokuk, Iowa) registered a pair of singles victories at No. 5, defeating Buena Vista's Sarah Larson (6-3, 6-2) and Morningside's Kassie Hein (6-3, 6-3).
Simpson hits the road again this weekend when it travels to Frayette and Decorah, taking on Upper Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday and Luther at 2 p.m.
