Schneider scores twice, Simpson shuts out Luther 6-0

DECORAH, Iowa – Getting a goal from freshman Savannah Schneider in each half, the Simpson College women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 shutout win over Luther.

Schneider gave the Storm (8-0-3, 2-0-0 A-R-C) a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute and was the second to score in the second period off an assist from Hailey Kowzan, who found the back of the net less than two minutes after halftime. Cassie Nash scored the gamewinner, Maddie Hays added her fourth penalty kick of the year, and Georgia Paulson tallied her second goal in as many games.

The Storm defense held Luther (1-6-5, 1-1-1 A-R-C) to nine shots en route to its fifth shutout of the year. Meredith Downs made four saves in 79 minutes of action, while Braelyn Thomas stopped one shot in the final 11 minutes.

NOTES

  • Savannah Schneider, Hailey Kowzan, and Georgia Paulson all scored for the second game in a row, while Cassie Nash extended her streak to four games. 
  • The Storm have found the back of the net first in all but one contest this season, which was a scoreless draw.
  • This was Simpson's second straight outing scoring six times. The Storm have scored at least two goals in every game this season except its scoreless tie on Sept. 3.
  • Maddie Hays is now 13-for-15 in career penalty kicks, including a perfect 4-for-4 this season.
  • Nash has recorded at least one point in all but one game this season. Tonight was her 21st gamewinner and 75th career goal, tying Erin Goettl for second all-time.
  • Meredith Downs remains undefeated through 19 career starts, boasting a record of 15-0-4 with six solo shutouts and three combined clean sheets.
  • This is the first time in program history Simpson has been undefeated through 11 games. The Storm have not faced a deficit in 2024.
  • Winning their sixth straight over the Norse, the Storm take a 19-18-3 lead in the all-time series.
