Simpson ties for 10th at Wartburg Invite
WAVERLY, Iowa - Matt Spaulding (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) carded a 6-over 150 in leading Simpson to a tie for 10th at the Wartburg Spring Invitational held at Centennial Oaks Golf Course Saturday and Sunday.
As a team, Simpson shot 303 on Saturday followed by a 318 Sunday for 621, tying them with Buena Vista. Nebraska Wesleyan won the tournament with a 587, edging Central by two strokes (589). Luther took third (591) followed by Iowa Western C.C. and Wartburg, which tied for fourth (605). St. Olaf (609), Central White (614) Augsburg (615) and Kirkwood C.C. rounded out the top of the 21-team field.
Spaulding closed the tournament with a 4-over 76 after shooting a 74 to open the tournament Saturday. He finished tied for 17th, the only Simpson player in the top 20 of the 112 participants.
Michael Peterson (Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) finished tied for 27th, carding Simpson's low-round on the weekend with a 1-over 73 on Saturday. He finished with a 153 after closing the tournament with an 80 on Sunday.
James Montgomery (Knoxville, Iowa/Knoxville) tied for 47th with a 157 (76-81), John Richter (Marshalltown, Iowa/GMG) tied for 65th with a 161 (80-81) and Grant Northway (Altoona, Iowa/Grandview Park Baptist) tied for 84th with a 166 (84-82). Golfing unattached, Nick Tanner (Sheldon, Iowa/Sheldon) tied for 74th with a 163 (80-83).
Simpson will participate in the William Penn JV Invitational Tuesday, April 13 before going to the Buena Vista Invitational April 16-17.
