Simpson place sixth, Montgomery takes fourth
WAVERLY, Iowa - James Montgomery (Knoxville, Iowa/Knoxville) turned in the highest individual finish by a Simpson golfer at the Iowa Conference Championship since 2005 and Simpson placed sixth as a team as play concluded at Centennial Oaks Golf Course on Saturday.
Central won the team title, placing four golfers in the top-11. Luther finished second, followed by Buena Vista, Wartburg and Loras. The Storm shot a 1272, ahead of Coe, Dubuque and Cornell.
Montgomery finished the tournament with a 13-over 302, four strokes behind medalist Andy Soper of Buena Vista. Montgomery led the tournament after shooting even par in the third round and boasted the lowest round of the tournament, carding a 68 in the second round.
Montgomery's fourth-place finish is the best by a Simpson golfer since Mike Martin placed second in 2005.
Matt Spaulding (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) turned in Simpson's second-best finish, placing 28th (322). Grant Northway (Altoona, Iowa/Grandview Park Baptist) took 29th (323), John Richter (Marshalltown, Iowa/GMG) placed 37th (341) and Nick Tanner (Sheldon, Iowa/Sheldon) tied for 38th (343).
