Storm show improvement, place 14th at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Simpson men's golf team posted its second-best round of the season at the Buena Vista Spring Invitational on Saturday, finishing 14th of 19 teams over the weekend.

The Storm shot 322 in the tournament's final round and finished at 646 on the weekend after an opening-round 324 on Friday. Central, Northwestern and Southeast CC (Neb.) all tied for first, shooting 603 at Storm Lake's Lake Creek Country Club.

"We have continued to improve throughout the season but are falling short of what we are capable of accomplishing," head coach Jason Marvelli said. "The guys are getting better and are working hard to close the gap."

Conner Juilfs shot Simpson's low-round of the weekend with a 78 on Saturday, closing with a 36-hole score of 159 to tie for 42nd.

Andy Hutchins was steady throughout the tournament, posting 80s in each round to tie for 48th.

Zach Hale found five strokes from Friday to Saturday, following Friday's 84 with a 79 on Saturday. His 163 tied for 64th.

Joe Hupp led the Storm with a 79 in the first round, but his 85 in the second round put him at 164, tied for 69th.

Matt Haley rounded out the lineup with a 171 (85, 86), tying for 96th.

Simpson opens the Iowa Conference Championship this weekend. The first two rounds of the four-round tournament will take place at Bos Landen Golf Resort in Pella, Iowa, on April 27-28.
