Men's tennis picks up first win of spring season

INDIANOLA - Simpson earned its first win of the spring season over the weekend, shutting out Midland (Neb.) 9-0 on Friday. The Storm fell to Doane and Concordia (Neb.) on Saturday.

The Storm (1-6) posted wins in each contested match against Midland and benefitted from forfeits at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Alex Hook led the charge, cruising past Adam Hoisington at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3.

"It was a great team effort to get our first win of the year," head coach Bill Wright said. "Alex played very well and beat a nice player in Hoisington."

Adam Summitt topped CJ Anderson at No. 2 (6-0, 6-2), Noah Saunders defeated Tyler Sherlock at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0), Dylan Hogan beat Lee Horky at No. 4 (6-2, 6-0) and Lucas Haack tripped up Adam Newport at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0).

The top doubles team of Summitt and Hook beat Hoisington and Sherlock 8-2 and the duo of Saunders and Daniel Schneider beat Anderson and Horky at No. 2, 8-3.

The Storm found themselves in a battle against Doane, losing two, third-set tiebreakers in the 5-4 loss.

Summitt and Saunders picked up easy, two-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and the doubles teams of Summitt and Hook and Saunders and Schneider picked up 8-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively.

Hogan dropped a tough, three-set match to Josh Johnson at No. 4 singles. After taking the first set 6-1, he dropped the second 6-4 before suffering a 10-7 loss in the tiebreaker. Schneider had a similar result in the sixth spot, losint 6-4, 5-7, 10-5.

Simpson went up against a solid Concordia team in the final match of the weekend, losing 8-1. Saunders picked up the team's lone win, edging Danny Frastaci 9-8 (7-5) at No. 3 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Saunders and Schneider fought back from a 7-4 deficit against Frastaci and Kyle Kaldahl, but eventaully fell 9-8 (7-2).

The team returns to action this weekend when it travels to Eau Claire, Wis. to face UW-Eau Claire and Concordia (Wis.).
