INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The game started nearly three hours late, but for the Simpson women's soccer team, the wait was well worth it.
Simpson used a complete team effort to beat Buena Vista 3-0 on Homecoming Friday at Buxton Stadium, the team's second consecutive shutout win. Originally scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., the game didn't begin until 6:55 after numerous lightning delays stalled the start of the game.
The Storm improve to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the American Rivers Conference while the Beavers fall to 1-9 and 0-3 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Storm earned a penalty try in the 22nd minute thanks a takedown in the box by a Buena Vista defender. Aimee Shrock calmly converted the PK, going with a low shot into the right net to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Shrock now has three goals on the season, all on PKs.
Simpson nearly took a 2-0 lead just 11 minutes later, but Baileigh Nagy's goal off a through-ball from Dani Marquez was disallowed due to an offsides call. Fortunately, both players took advantage of opportunities to extend the lead in the second half.
Less than 5 minutes into the second half, Marquez beat Beaver keeper Katie Voortmann, scoring from 10 yards out. Marquez's second goal in as many games gave the Storm a 2-0 advantage.
Nagy put the game away just 3 minutes later on a beautiful through-ball from Cassidy Price. Nagy took the deep serve, then hammered home her third goal of the season from the near right wing. Price registered her second assist in as many games.
- Freshman goalkeeper Aspen Brockhouse turned in her second straight clean sheet to improve to 2-4-0 on the year. She made three saves on the night.
- Simpson out-shot Buena Vista 13-5, the first time the Storm have out-shot an opponent this season.
- The Storm have won back-to-back games for the first time since 2015 and back-to-back conference games for the first time since 2011.
Simpson travels to Luther on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Start time is set for 5 p.m in Decorah.
