Women's golf in third after first round at IIAC tourney

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Katie Vaux (Sr., Union, Iowa) leads an evenly matched trio of Simpson golfers after the opening round of the 2009 Iowa Conference from the Pheasant Ridge Golf Club.

Vaux shot an opening round 10-over 82, followed closely by Taylor Hillery (So., Dubuque, Iowa) and Megan Smith (Sr., Eagle Grove, Iowa), who each shot 11-over 83. Vaux currently sits in a tie for ninth, while Hillery and Smith are tied for 12th.

After 18 holes of the 72-hole Iowa Conference Championship, Simpson finds itself in third at 335. The Storm is 24 strokes off the pace set by Wartburg and holds a two-shot lead over fourth-place Luther. Central shot a 322 on day one, good for second place.

Simpson will complete the Pheasant Ridge phase of the tournament tomorrow, before the field moves to Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah, Iowa.
