INDIANOLA, Iowa - Whitney Godden made four of her five 3-pointers in the second half and Iowa Wesleyan made 12 as a team to upset the No. 16 Simpson women's basketball team 69-65 on Tuesday night.
Godden finished with 15 points and Karla Vietinghoff had 17 as the Tigers (2-1) beat Simpson for the first time in the 14-game series. Iowa Wesleyan trailed by as many as 15 in the first half and was down 34-27 at halftime.
Simpson trailed by six with just under 3 minutes to play before cutting the Iowa Wesleyan lead to 67-65 after a perfect trip to the line by Katie Ahrenholtz. Maddie Muhlenbruck forced a jump ball on the ensuing inbounds play to give Simpson the ball back with 12 seconds left, but MacKenzie Haupt came up short on a go-ahead 3-point attempt from the left corner.
Jana Meister grabbed the rebound and put the game away with a pair of free throws. The Tigers went 15 of 17 from the line, including 14 of 16 in the second half.
Brooke Panzer collected her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Storm (2-1), who were ranked No. 16 in the most recent USA Today Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Ahrenholtz added 14 points and Haupt scored 14 off the bench.
Simpson struggled from the 3-point line, going an uncharacteristic 4-for-21.
The Storm led by nine midway through the second half before the Tigers mounted a 15-1 run. Stephanie Russak made back-to-back 3s to start the spurt and Godden hit a 3 with 7:16 left to give Iowa Wesleyan a 52-50 lead.
The Tigers made four of their eight second half 3-pointers during the run, whcih spanned 4 minutes, 39 seconds.
Simpson is off until Friday, Nov. 29 when it hosts the Simpson Classic.
