A veteran coach with experience at the Division III level, Brent Matthias enters his fourth season as the head softball coach at Simpson in 2020.

At the conclusion of the 2019 season which saw the Storm play in the American Rivers Conference Tournament Semifinals, the offense led the league with 26 home runs. Simpson beat one top-10 squad and three regionally ranked teams en route to the success in the conference tournament. The team had players from nine states across the country including Alaska and boasted the largest roster in the conference.

Matthias took the team to Chicago, Ill., St. Louis, Mo., Rochester, Minn., Orlando, Fla. and Cuba during last season aside from the games scheduled in Iowa. He guided the Storm in 40 varsity games and 27 junior varsity games during all of last season. Aside from the success on the field, his team showcased the best team grade-point average in the whole Simpson athletic department with a 3.68.

Matthias has elevated his coaching staff, bringing in three former head coaches for a total of six assistants to coach alongside him in the dugout during games and practices. Matthias and his assistants were able to pull off traveling to Cuba during the winter to become the first United States collegiate team allowed to play in Cuba.

Since joining Simpson, Matthias has had 10 players receive all-conference recognition, three all-region performers, one academic all-district and one academic All-American to showcase the academic and athletic prowess he has instilled in the program since taking over.

Matthias was named head coach on Dec. 14, 2015. Kyle Owens served as the interim head coach for the 2016 season while Matthias honored the final season of his contract with Waverly-Shell Rock. He led the Go-Hawks to a 33-6 mark in 2016, coming up one game short of the state tournament. His 2015 squad won a Class 4A-best 34 games and advanced to the State Tournament.

“Brent is a perfect fit for Simpson,” Director of Athletics Brian Niemuth said. “He has been a winner everywhere he’s coached and he brings significant experience as a recruiter at the Division III level. He has a great passion for coaching and we are excited for him to begin his tenure.”

Matthias began his coaching career as an assistant baseball coach at Wartburg College, where he also served in the admissions department. Matthias helped the Knights to four-straight Iowa Conference championships and four-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1999-2002, including the program’s first appearance in the Division III College World Series in 2000. He also spent the 2010 season as an assistant at Wartburg.

“I’m excited to be at a place where the foundation has been built and student-athletes have won two national titles,” Matthias said. “I’m excited to be a part of the Simpson family, knowing the importance that is placed on well-being of student-athletes. It’s a place where winning is important – both on the diamond and in life.”

Before taking his position at Waverly-Shell Rock, Matthias coached the Denver High School baseball team in Denver, Iowa from 2007-14. He won more than 130 games in his seven years with the Cyclones.

“I’ve always been a coach that likes to play at a fast pace with lots of energy so the kids have fun. We will play every day like it’s our last. Nothing is more important than the game ahead of us. Nothing is more important than the precious present, the day we have.”

Matthias and his wife, Kari, have four children: Brenden, Kali, Kira and Keela.
