WATERLOO, Iowa — Brett Dewerff advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play to lead the Simpson men's tennis team at the Iowa Conference Individual Tournament on Friday.
Competing in Flight C of the singles bracket, Dewerff blanked Dubuque's Zebulin Hill in the first round before advancing to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over Wartburg's Jonathan Lansink. He bowed out of the tournament with an 8-4 loss to Central's Colin Jones.
Gabe Dubberke and Aaron Smith also earned wins in Flight C. Dubberke won his "play-in" match before falling in the first round and Smith edged Coe's Mitchell Rubie 9-7 to advance to the second round. Smith lost a tight one to Central's Alex Anderson in the second round.
The duo of Smith and Dubberke picked up a doubles win for the Storm in Flight B, topping the team of Quinn Cockerill and Nick Baron from Loras 8-4.
