CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Ryan Skaar beat the shot clock with a clutch jumper in the final seconds, Matt Vonderhaar missed the potential game-tying 3, and the Simpson men's basketball team beat Coe 67-62 Saturday for its second straight win.
With the shot clock winding down and Simpson clinging to a 62-59 lead, Skaar got his defender in the air with a shot fake, took a dribble to the right and hit a high-arching jumper from the baseline as the shot clock expired to make it 64-59 with 29 seconds left.
Vonderhaar had a chance to tie with Coe trailing 65-62, but his 3-pointer from the top of the key went off the mark. DJ Dafney secured the board and hit a pair from the free throw line with 4 seconds left for the final margin.
Skaar finished with 13 points and Austin Turner had 14 for the Storm (11-6, 4-4 Iowa Conference), who have now won two in a row after losing four straight. Nick Noah had another big game off the bench with 10 points and Sam Amsbaugh finished with six points and nine rebounds.
Nolan Timp scored 13 points to lead the Kohawks (8-10, 4-5), who lost their third straight after beating Simpson 80-70 last Saturday in Indianola. Reigning IIAC Player of the Week Marshall Shedeck finished with nine points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 1:22 left.
A close game throughout, neither team led by more than seven. Turner's free throw with 2 seconds left in the first half gave Simpson a 36-35 lead at the break and the Storm never trailed in the second half.
Simpson goes to Buena Vista on Monday, Jan. 23 in a makeup game from Jan. 16. The conference-leading Beavers (11-6, 7-1) beat Luther 75-55 on Saturday.
