INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson football players Clay Finley and Alex Severn were recently named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8® First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
As first team selections, Finley and Severn advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honors will be selected in December.
Finley, a junior defensive end from Muscatine, Iowa, carried a 3.63 cumulative GPA into the fall semester as a physical education and exercise science double major. Finley led the team in sacks (4.5) and tackles for loss (10.5), ranking among the Iowa Conference leaders in both categories. He also served as the team's long snapper.
Finley is a veteran of the United States Army, where he was a Specialist for the 82nd Airborne. His tour included 358 days in Afghanistan.
Severn, a junior defensive tackle from Council Bluffs, Iowa, carried a 3.84 cumulative grade point average in applied philosophy into the fall semester. He minors in mathematics and political science. Severn finished the season sixth on the team in tackles (35), leading all defensive linemen. He is active on campus, serving as the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and participating in student government.
Severn is also a member of Simpson's award-winning debate team, which was recently recognized as a College Public Forum National Co-Champion.
